$100.00
Australia's GST rate is 10%. Most goods and services are taxable, but some items (such as basic food and certain health services) are GST-free.
How GST is calculated
The Australian Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a flat 10% on the value of most goods and services. The two calculations you will need most often are adding GST and removing it.
Adding GST
Total = price + GST
If a service costs $1,000 before GST, the GST is $100 and the total is $1,100. This is the calculation you use when quoting a business customer who is registered for GST.
Removing GST from a total
Price ex-GST = total − GST
Dividing by 11 is the quickest way to extract GST from a GST-inclusive amount, because the total is 110% of the base price. A $1,100 total contains $100 of GST.
Why the 10% rate matters for quoting
Australian business quotes are usually shown either GST-exclusive or GST-inclusive, and mixing the two is a common source of invoicing errors. If you quote $5,000 "plus GST", the customer pays $5,500. If you quote $5,000 "including GST", you only keep about $4,545 before GST is remitted.
GST-free and input-taxed supplies
Not everything attracts GST. Common categories include:
- GST-free: many basic foods, some medical and health services, education courses, and exports.
- Input-taxed: residential rent, financial supplies, and some second-hand goods.
This calculator assumes a standard taxable supply at 10%. If your supply is GST-free or input-taxed, the GST amount is zero.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST in Australia?
Multiply the GST-exclusive price by 0.10 to get the GST, then add it to the original price. For example, $1,000 × 0.10 = $100 GST, giving a GST-inclusive price of $1,100.
How do I remove GST from a total?
Divide the GST-inclusive amount by 11. For example, $1,100 ÷ 11 = $100 GST, and the GST-exclusive amount is $1,100 − $100 = $1,000. You can also divide by 1.1 to get the ex-GST amount directly.
What is the GST rate in Australia?
The GST rate is 10%. It has been 10% since the tax was introduced on 1 July 2000.
Is everything subject to GST?
No. Some goods and services are GST-free (for example, many basic foods, some health and education services) and others are input-taxed (such as residential rent). This calculator assumes a standard 10% taxable supply.
Do I need an ABN to charge GST?
You must be registered for GST to charge it. Registration is generally required once your business turnover reaches $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits). This calculator does not determine whether you should be registered.
